Domuyo is a stratovolcano located where the Cordillera del Viento begins, in the north of the Patagonian province of Neuquén, in southwestern Argentina. At 4707 masl, it is the highest mountain in Patagonia. Its name is of Mapuche origin and means "that which trembles and growls," probably due to its geothermal activity.
From its imposing summit you can take in the Cordillera Sur of Mendoza province, northwestern Neuquén, neighboring Chile, and volcanoes such as Copahue, Antuco, Sierra Velluda, Nevados de Chillán, Tromen, and the peaks Campanario and Sierra Nevada.

For us, this emblematic peak is the first step into high-altitude mountaineering with expedition-style logistics.
Our program is 5 days long, which increases your chances of success on the summit push, since the altitude and exposure to wind make this volcano a challenge for those just starting out on the path of climbing high mountains. Although we're still in our beloved Patagonia, Domuyo (known as "the roof of Patagonia") tops 4,000 meters and demands that everyone be in good physical shape.
Our base camp will be a set of domes where we'll have creature comforts and avoid carrying the weight of tents, cooking gear, dinners, and breakfasts, making our rest much more effective.
The first 3 days of the expedition are acclimatization days, when we'll get our bodies used to the lower oxygen pressure.

On the fourth day we'll set out very early to try to reach the summit of the volcano, a day when every step brings us a little closer to the roof of Patagonia. We'll leave the comfort of the domes behind to tackle 1600 meters of elevation gain over 6 kilometers.
The most technical part of the expedition, called "La Montura" (the saddle), is a 45-degree ramp where we'll use all of our technical gear: crampons, ropes, ice axes, etc. to reach the south ridge, and step by step, with the Patagonian wind at our side, we'll reach our goal of standing on the highest point in Patagonia.
